Water-conscious car lovers join World Water Day celebrations in Sydney

Tuesday, 25 March 2008

In the most ironic of twists, the heavens opened up on Saturday March 22, the calendar date created to symbolise the need to conserve our most precious natural resource. World Water Day managed to make headlines around the globe and proved a memorable one for Australian waterless carwash ecowash mobile, who staged their own event in several countries simultaneously.

ecowash mobile, which now operate in 10 countries, staged free all-day carwashes for the general public in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania as well as overseas locations including Paris, Nice, Athens, Las Vegas and the Middle East. Their water-saving initiative was classified as a global event on the official World Water Day website, one of only a handful of activities to receive that level of recognition.

The free carwash demonstration at Penrith Panthers saw 21 cars washed prior to lunch and before a relentless downpour put a halt to proceedings - contributing to a total of 98 cars washed in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle, Launceston, Hobart and Townsville.  An estimated 17,640 litres of water was saved on a day in Australia, adding to similar activities going on overseas. However, ecowash mobile operations director Stewart Nicholls feels the figure was the tip of a potential iceberg due to the inclement weather in various locations.

“The day went fantastically well, despite absolutely torrential rain in a few of our key areas, including Sydney and Newcastle. The irony of that wonderful resource coming down by the bucket load wasn't lost on us and we aren't complaining,” he laughed.

“Lots of people who participated in the day's activities weren't aware that World Water Day even existed, nor were they familiar of the concept of a waterless carwash so on that count alone the day was a successful one.”

Canberra resident Hans Schenk, who received the ecowash treatment on his Volvo in Penrith on Saturday, said he was previously unaware the idea of a waterless carwash even existed.

“I had never heard of World Water Day nor did I know that you could clean a car without water. I was very impressed by the results. It was a shame about the rain as the more people to know about World Water Day and a carwash that doesn't waste water, the better.”
